Powidl, a black, thick plum jam is a speciality of the Bohemian cuisine, which also found its way into the Austrian kitchens, especially during the Imperial and Royal period. Powidl is an important ingredient in Austria and Bohemia in the dessert kitchen and patisserie. It doesn’t matter if it’s sweet rolls, tarts, powidl pouches or yeast dumplings, it’s simply not possible without powidl.
Friends of the tart and unconventional taste enjoy powidl as a classic spread.
The special consistency and taste of the powidl is the result of the fruit’s long cooking time. For 500g powidl approx. 1.5kg plums were cooked for several hours to obtain the typical powidl taste.
